IV: TEA

A trip to Pendle Hill often involved stopping at one of the many tea gardens along the route.

In Barley, W. J. Martin ran refreshment rooms at the site opposite Barley Chapel, with Drivers on the site of the current Barley Mow. In Roughlee, Happy Valley Tea Gardens, Clarion House and Noggarth top were popular stops, especially for those arriving from Nelson and Colne. Thorneyholme and Crowtrees also housed popular tea rooms.

The countryside offered more than the challenge of conquering the mighty Pendle Hill; the longest hike or ride.

It was – and is – about companionship and shared enjoyment. The many popular tea rooms become welcoming hubs. Here, friends and families gathered to relax, chat over drinks and snacks, and cement bonds.

The rural landscape is as much about connection as it is about exertion.
