Pendle Hill Museum

Following months of prep, Pendle Hill Museum is excited to welcome you to our first pop-up exhibition: WORK/LIFE, at Roughlee Village Centre on 1-2 November from 10am to 6pm.

WORK/LIFE is our first major exhibition, funded by Historic England’s Everyday Heritage programme. It dives into the working class history of East Lancashire to explore the changing relationships between work and leisure, town and countryside.

Focused on picturesque villages at the foot of Pendle Hill – Barley, Newchurch-in-Pendle and Roughlee – WORK/LIFE explores how families from local mill towns travelled to the countryside for relaxation, and how this transformed these tiny villages into rural leisure destinations for workers between 1900-1980.

Featuring:

  • Historic photos and memories from Roughlee’s Boating Lake and Pleasure Grounds, Happy Valley Tea Garden, Clarion House, Noggarth Tea Garden, Thorneyholme Hall and the Bay Horse Inn; Barley’s Pendle Inn and Old Post Office Tearoom; and Newchurch’s Lamb Inn and Friendly Inn, and many more
  • Photos from our Hill & High Fashion workshop, showcasing today’s postcards of everyday rural leisure
  • A special Temperance Bar (a nod to local history) serving the best non-alcoholic spirits whilst you browse

Venue: Roughlee Village Centre, Pasture Lane, Roughlee, Lancashire BB9 6NR
Dates: 1-2 November 2025, 10am to 6pm
